| Striking a balance
A professor at Britain’s Bristol University recently said many people believe that if they receive an organ donation they also get the characteristics of the donor.
People most fear receiving an organ from a murderer, and would prefer to have a donation from a good person. There is no scientific support for notions like this and scientists argue that they are nothing more than a kind of superstition.
‘There is no proof that personality can travel with an organ donation,’ the professor explained.
This of course makes sense. You might ask, can we receive the memories and experiences of a pig when we eat pork? I certainly haven’t. But could I really say that someone who says they have is wrong?
I think not everything can be explained by science. Science, for example, cannot explain the feelings we have when we are in love.
For this reason I try to maintain a balanced view – neither a ’scientist’ nor a ’superstitious believer’.

Thanks for your interesting letter, Ching-wah. Science has come a long way to explaining many things in our lives and even of our personalities and characters. Some people believe that our memories can be stored in our cells, not only our brains.
When we consider what information our cells do store – locked in our genes – it is not too difficult to imagine that some cellular organ might also store other information about us. The idea has certainly intrigued many fiction writers and we can see it in the movies The Eye and Body Parts.
The concept has also arisen in the popular Metal Gear Solid video game series. Of course, these all have negative storylines. But, who knows? Perhaps getting a transplant might really bring about a change of heart.
